Waldo Dean Waterman first flew in San Diego in 1909; he last flew in 1972. He was with Curtiss at North Island when he co-founded U.S. Naval Aviation, invented the seaplane, and began the development of the flying boat. Waldo knew--and flew with--virtually everyone during those early, fascinating and tumultuous years: Jimmy Doolittle (Waldo taught him the 'theory of flight'!), Howard Hughes (and "Hell's Angels"), Amelia Earhart when she was but a student pilot, Charles Lindbergh before (and after) he flew the Atlantic. Just to mention a few. There were so many more!
