The GDL 39 offers the complete package that combines a dual-link ADS-B receiver and Garmin’s industry-leading GPS receiver into a single unit that streams ADS-B datalink traffic and subscription-free weather to select Garmin aviation portables including the aera® 796/795, aera 500 series, GPSMAP® 696/695, G3X™ experimental flight display and select Garmin Pilot™ app compatible devices.

Subscription-free weather information is continuously broadcast using the FAA’s 978 MHz UAT uplink and is similar to the basic services offered by leading commercial satellite weather providers.

Weather services include access to NEXRAD imagery (which can also be put in motion as new data is collected on select devises), METARs, TAFs, winds and temperatures aloft, PIREPs, NOTAMs and more.

Pilots can also receive ADS-B datalink traffic information with alerts to help identify potential traffic conflicts. In addition to receiving traffic data from ADS-B ground stations, the dual-link GDL 39 features direct air-to-air ADS-B reception on both ADS-B frequencies (1090 and 978 UAT) to provide a more comprehensive view of potential flight path conflicts. In order to maximize available traffic information for the display, the aircraft should also be equipped with a compliant ADS-B “out” solution like the GDL 88 or GTX 330ES/33/23 ES transponders.

The GDL 39 provides weather and traffic information via wireless support for compatible mobile devices like the iPad and Andriod tablets via built-in Bluetooth® connection and wired connections for compatible Garmin portables. The Bluetooth connection also allows two devices to connect to GDL 39 at once wirelessly, making it possible for two-pilot crews to view traffic and weather on separate devices from the same GDL 39. Garmin products including the aera 795/796, 500/510/550/560, GPSMAP® 695/696 and G3X series can connect to the GDL 39, as well as an external power source, via a wired connection. Traffic only compatible displays include theGPSMAP 496/495 and GPSMAP 396.

The portable design of the GDL 39 also includes a built-in WAAS GPS receiver, which brings Garmin’s industry-leading GPS location information to wirelessly connected mobile devices. The GDL 39 integrates seamlessly with the Garmin Pilot app to support its navigation functions with reliable and accurate GPS capability.

Can this device be used with area 500 and iPad simultaneously?

Yes you can hard wire one device (aera 500, 510, 550, 560, GPSMAP 696, 695, aera 796 or 795) and also output to an iPad or Android device at the same time.

Can this device output to multiple iPads at once or is it one iPad per GDL-39 receiver? Regarding part # 11-10728

The signal sent out by the GDL-39 receiver can be received by up to two iPads simulataneously.

Can P/N 11-10729 GDL 39 for the AERA 796 Bluetooth to the GDL 39 or is this the wired version to the GDL 39?

Part number 11-10729 is the wired version which connects the 796 directly to the GDL 39 with a single cig charging plug for both units. For the Bluethooth version you will want to order 11-10728.

Does the Garmin GDL 39 come with hardware/cable to connect to Aera 560?

If you order the GDL 39 to Aera 560 which is our part number 11-10727 it will come with a power and data cable to connect and power both units.

Can the GDL 39 be hard wired to a Garmin 496 and connected via Bluetooth to an iPad at the same time and will it operate both ForeFlight and FLYQ on the iPad?

Yes, ForeFlight is compatible with the GDL 39, 39 3D, and 39R ADS-B receivers with ForeFlight Mobile EFB versions 7.7.2 and later, provided the GDL39 has firmware version 4.0.0 or later. You can connect to the 496 (traffic only no ADS-B weather on the 496) via the 496/GDL 39 cable and you can still connect one additional iPad/Android device via Bluetooth (again only with the Garmin app).

Can the GDL 39 be hard wired to a Garmin 496 and connected via Bluetooth to an iPad at the same time and will it operate both ForeFlight and FLYQ on the iPad?

I have an Aera 500 (which I love) that mounts in a cradle that is plugged into a 12V cigarette lighter socket. I want to get traffic shown on my Aera. How does the GLD-39 connect to Aera 500 series?

The Aera 500 series GDL 39 cable is a single plug with three ends. One with a GDL 39 plug, one we an Aera 500 series bracket (like the one on the yoke mount) and lastly a cigarette plug to charge both.

Does the Bluetooth version of the GDL 39 for the iPad/Android/796/795 come with a cigarette lighter plug for power in the box?

Yes, the Bluetooth version comes with GDL 39, cigarette lighter plug and mount. This version can connect to two Bluetooth devices.

I am interested in a Garmin GDL 39. I already have an AERA 560 bare wire connector, which I have going to power and connected to an ELT. I have both the AERA 560 and an IPAD that I could use with the GDL 39. If I'm already using the Garmin bare wire connector, what remaining options do I have?

The GDL 39 will Bluetooth to the iPad. You can however do this as the ELT would get the aera 560 data through the 39 bare wire cable 11-10730 using the serial pass through option that is discussed in the GDL 39 users manual.

The GDL 39 receives ADS-B traffic and weather. However, The Aera 500 was never intended to display weather (only the 510 and 560 for XM). Does this mean that if I connect the GDL 39 to my Aera 500 I only get traffic or will I also see weather?

The Aera 500 and 550 cannot do XM weather but can do ADS-B weather and traffic via the GDL 39.

I have a Garmin 696. Does the GDL 39 have a separate part number for mating to 696? I note a power cable to interconnect & power both units is required - it this included with the GDL 39?

The part number for the GDL 39 (with plug for GDL 39 & 696 to a cigarette plug) is 11-10725. If you want to hard wire both units you will need to order 11-10730 (GDL 39 with bare wire cable) and part number 11-07056 (power data cable for the 696). This will give data for the 696 and also Blutooth data to one other device.

I have an Aera 560, if I add a GDL 39 receiver it must be hard wired? Can I also connect the Garmin Pilot Android app via Bluetooth to receive data at the same time?

Yes you will have to hard wire the Aera 560 as it does not have a Bluetooth feature (use 11-10727). As the GDL 39 has two inputs you can Bluetooth to another Bluetooth device using the Garmin pilot app.

What is battery life for the GDL 39?

Per the Garmin manual, the average battery life is 4 hours.

Do all GDL 39 units come with an internal battery or is that only available via the optional base mount add on?

No, the GDL 39 back up battery add-on is an additional accessory. An internal battery for the GDL 39 does not exist.

Can the GDL 39 ADS-B and GPS Receiver display weather information internationally, such as in my country Mexico?

No, this unit is intended to be used with the Garmin Pilot App in the USA only.

What traffic services will I receive from the GDL 39?

The GDL 39 has the ability to receive two types of traffic; air-to-air and ground-to-air. The GDL 39 can detect and display other aircraft in the vicinity of your aircraft, that are equipped with an ADS-B Out transponder with ES (Extended Squitter) or a Universal Access Transceiver (UAT). The GDL 39 also has the ability to receive Traffic Information Service (TIS-B) from FAA ground stations transmitted over the 1090 MHz datalink.

How can I update the firmware on the GDL 39?

The process for updating the firmware will vary depending on what device you are using with the GDL 39. If you are using the GDL 39 along with a Garmin aviation portable device the software will be received through the portable device. The software for your portable can be obtained by either visiting myGarmin.com or using our WebUpdater program. If you are using the GDL 39 along with an iOS or Android moible device you can use the GDL 39 Utility Application available on the iTunes App Store and the Google Play Store.

How many devices can I connect to the GDL 39?

The GDL 39 can be connected to as many as three devices at one time. A connection to the GDL 39 can be made two different ways; either by using a power/data cable or a Bluetooth connection. The GDL 39 can be connected to several Garmin aviation portables via a power/data cable (included with the GDL 39) as well as two bluetooth enabled devices (i.e. aera 796, iPad, or Android tablet). Compatible Garmin Aviation products include the aera 795/796, aera 5XX Series, GPSMAP 695/696, GPSMAP 495/496, GPSMAP 396, G3X Garmin Pilot Application for iOS and Android tablets and phones.

What weather services will I receive from the GDL 39?

The GDL 39 has the ability to receive subscription free Flight Information Service (FIS-B) that is broadcast from FAA ground stations around the United States and the Gulf of Mexico. FIS-B weather products include NEXRAD in the Continental U.S., NEXRAD Regional, TFR, TAF, PIREP, NOTAM, SIGMET/AIRMET, METAR, and Winds Aloft information. One key difference between FIS-B and satellite based weather services is that FIS-B is broadcast from the ground upward.

Can the GDL 39 display traffic and weather on my certified panel mounted avionics?

No, the GDL 39 will only interface with Garmin Aviation portables and experimental products, as well as iOS and Android tablets and phones. These products include the aera 796/795, GPSMAP 696/695, aera 5XX Series, GPSMAP 496/495, GPSMAP 396, and the G3X.

I currently have a Garmin GPSMAP 696 mounted in a panel dock, hard-wired, with a Zaon XRX for traffic, and Sirius XM for weather. If I install a 330ES transponder and a GDL-39, will this satisfy the FAA 2020 mandate?

The GDL 39 is an ADS-B in device. In order to comply with FAA 2020 mandate, you would need an ADS-B (out) compliant. ADS-B out equipment is always installed in the aircraft and certified (never portable).

Will the GDL 39 ADS-B receiver work with Foreflight?

Per Foreflight: The portable GDL 39 delivers ADS-B weather and traffic, as well as GPS data. The portable GDL 39 3D has the same features as the GDL 39, but with its internal attitude sensor, adds dynamic pitch and bank information to ForeFlights backup attitude and Synthetic Vision views. The GDL 39R delivers ADS-B weather and traffic and is designed to work with the Garmin G3X Touch.

Will the GDL 39 display all traffic with a non garmin ADS-B out such as aspen ADS-B out solution?

We do not recommend interfacing the GDL-39 with any non Garmin products. There is no cross-reference data available as of 5/7/2015.

Hi. I live in Chile, South America. I have an aera 796 portable gps. I need to know if the GDL 39 will work as traffic information when coupled with the 796 via bluetooth. If not, which GDL (if any) would do?

No, The GDL 39 will only provide ADS-B weather and traffic data in the USA. For traffic information outside of the USA, you would need to order either 11-02449 or 11-02782.

The GDL 39 has TIS-B traffic that displays free ADS-B based traffic data. The GDL 39 will only provide this type of traffic data.

Will the GDL work wirelessly with my Aera 660 or must it be hardwired. Does the hardwire version draw power from my 660. Can I use the GDL 39 simultaneously with my Aera 660 and a Bluetooth android device using Avare?

The aera 660 will accept a bluetooth input from a gdl 39 or, can be be hardwired with the cradle included in the 11-14882 kit. The cradle will provide power to both the aera 660 and gdl 39 from the cigarette lighter plug. The gdl 39 will provide data to multiple bluetooth devices simultaneously.

Hi. In your specs for the GDL39 you state that it does not receive information outside of the USA. Are you referring to weather? In NZ there is no weather info. Id only want it to provide ADSB traffic in. I also want to connect it to my Garmin 695. Would it work here? If the answer is yes, which model would be suitable? Since Id have to hardwire it to the 695 Id also like to hardwire it to power as well. Cheers, Jack

The ADS-B system, which provides the weather and traffic information via ground towers, is only available in the USA. There will be no use other than GPS data for the GDL 39 in other countries, like New Zealand. Your 695 already has GPS signal, so we would not recommend this product for your application.

The GDL 39 is not listed on the FAA certified equipment list and appears not to qualify for the rebate. Will the 39 with my Aera 510 meet the 2020 Sean in requirements? If so why is it not on the approved list?

No, the GDL 39 is ADS-B In only. It does not meet any requirements for the 2020 ADS-B Out Mandates.

I read that the GDL-39 does not provide traffic and weather outside of the US. Is that a GDL-39 or a Garmin Pilot App limitation? If it is a Garmin Pilot App limitation would I get traffic and weather if I were to purchase the Garmin Pilot Canadian, Mexican, and/or Bahamian data bases?

That is a limitation of where the ADS-B broadcast is available. If there is a weather and traffic ADS-B broadcast, this unit will display it within the app. Please check with your local aviation agency to confirm whether this broadcast is available.

Does the GDL 39 unit need to remain flat or can it be positioned on its side? I would like to use a mount to have to off the dash. Understood that the unit has to be positioned forward and aft orientation.

The unit received the best signal with the antenna in the vertical position. This does not mean it will not receive the data in another orientation, but optimal is with antenna vertical.

The description mentions the GPSMAP 296, but the compatibility chart does not. Does it work with a 296?

Yes, part # 11-10726 works with the Garmin GPSMAP 296 via hard wire.

I have a Garmin GPSMAP 696 mounted in a panel dock, Zaon XRX and XM all hard wired to it. If possible, I would like to replace the Zaon and XM with a hardwired GDL 39 for ADS-B traffic in and weather to be displayed on the 696 but Im unsure what model # and cables I need to hardwire everything. Please advise. Thanks!

Part# 11-10725 will allow you to remove the old items, and hardwire the GDL 39 to the 696 GPSMAP.

Does the GDL 39 work in Canada?

It will work to receive GPS signal in Canada. But since Canada does not use ADS-B at this point, you will not receive the weather and traffic in Canada.

Will the GDL 39 work (Bluetooth) with the new Aera 760? What other ADS-B Receiver work with the new Aera 760?

Yes, it will connect via Bluetooth. You can also use the GDL 50, GDL 52, or panel mount units like the GTX345 or the GNX375.
