How do these controls actually lock? The half-turn is what I am looking for.

Per the supplier: the knob is turned 90 degrees to lock the cable.

Regarding p/n 05-17372, Is it quite rigid cable like piano wire? Also, what is the diameter?

I think you are referring to the inner cable. If so, it is a flexible .078" diameter 7x7 cable, and the housing is 1/4" flexible bowden style housing.

What type of end is on the cable and thread size. Is there a teflon inner cable coating?

That is a solid wire cable end so it would not have a thread size. The A1600 series units do have a teflon liner in the housing.
