Can't tell where this actually mounts the compass on the RV-6... does the attach to the center post or the top of the instrument panel, or somewhere else? Can I see a side a picture of how it installs on the airplane?

The RV6 mount is intended for use on the windscreen. This is for the RV6 canopies which slide straight back. If your canopy opens from the side, please see part number 10-07600.

Does this attach to the windscreen or to the structural tube on the sliders? I have a RV7 slider.
